  • Alma Mater: University of Texas-Pan American (BS, 1988)
  • After graduating from Morgan City HS (LA), Johnson played four years at UTPA (now UTRGV) for head coaches Lon Kruger and Kevin Wall
    • Had several stints playing professionally in England, including two years as player/coach with the Oldham Celtics (1990-92)
    • In between stints, he spent one year back in Louisiana as an assistant coach at Northwestern State under Dan Bell
    • Was also an assistant coach from 1992-96 at Bryan HS (TX)
  • Returned to his alma mater UTPA and spent the 1996-97 season as an assistant under Mark Adams
  • Spent two years on Billy Kennedy‘s staff at then-Division I Centenary in Shreveport, LA, then was elevated to head coach in 1999
    • Went 65-100 over six seasons, a tenure that included the program’s first couple years in the Summit League
  • Worked as an assistant for the next eighteen years at D-I programs across his home state, with stints at Louisiana Tech (under Keith Richard), Nicholls (under J.P. Piper), Louisiana-Lafayette (under Bob Marlin) and Tulane (under Ron Hunter)
    • Part of 1 NCAA Tournament, 1 NIT and 3 CITs as an assistant coach
  • Hired in March 2023 to be the new head coach at Southern in the SWAC
