Naismith Player of the Year
List of Naismith Player of the Year winners
Every year since 1969, the Atlanta Tipoff Club has presented the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award (or simply Naismith Player of the Year Award) to recognize the top men’s college basketball player of the season. A women’s award was added in 1983. Both awards are named after Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball who later became the first head coach at Kansas. Two men have won the award three times each: UCLA‘s Bill Walton (1972-74) and Virginia‘s Ralph Sampson (1981-83). Duke is the program with the most winners (eight), followed by UCLA (five), Virginia, North Carolina and Purdue (three each). See also: Naismith Coach of the Year
