- Hometown: Hattiesburg, Mississippi
- Alma Mater: University of Kansas (BA, 1991)
- Played at Kansas for head coach Larry Brown, leading the Jayhawks to the NCAA National Championship in 1988
- Won several national awards his senior year, including the Naismith POY, Wooden Award, NABC POY and Final Four MOP
- Was a three-time AP All-American (1986-88), and named Big Eight Player of the Year three times (1986-1988)
- Drafted first overall in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, where he played for 5+ seasons
- Won a bronze model with Team USA at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea
- Played for six NBA franchises over the course of a 15-year career, scoring 12,367 points, dishing 2,063 assists and grabbing 1,000 steals
