Hall of Fame head coach and UConn legend Jim Calhoun is coming out of retirement. The 76-year-old coach will be the head coach at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT, a Division III program that is playing men’s basketball for the first time ever in 2018-19. Prior to 2018, the school had been all-female.

It had previously been announced in September 2017 that Calhoun was working with the school to build up the program, but the official announcement naming Calhoun as the head men’s coach did not come until Tuesday.

Calhoun is one of five head coaches to win at least three Division I NCAA titles. He has been officially out of coaching since retiring in 2012, though he has held an advisory role within the UConn program in the years since and was still a fixture around the team.

The Massachusetts-native has spent his entire professional career coaching between Boston and the state of Connecticut. He and his wife of over 50 years own homes in both Pomfret and Madison, CT. Calhoun’s new office will be just about 30 miles from UConn’s Storrs campus.

The Blue Jays season opener is on November 9, a home game against William Patterson. The game will take place at the Trinity College gym in Hartford, which has more than double the capacity of the O’Connell Center on the Saint Joseph campus.
