- Started his career at Army West Point, where he played for head coaches Mike Krzyzewski and Pete Gaudet
- Finished his degree and playing career at Division II Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma
- Began coaching at his alma mater, spending four seasons as an assistant for the Aggies
- Moved up to the D-I ranks in 1988, working under Tom Abatemarco for one season at Drake, Eddie Fogler for six seasons at Vanderbilt and South Carolina and then Roy Williams for seven seasons at Kansas
- Was part of seven NCAA Tournaments (incl. 2002 Final Four) and two NITs (incl. 1990 NIT title) as an assistant
- Hired in 2002 to be the head coach at TCU, leading the Horned Frogs for six seasons
- Went 75-108 overall and reached the postseason just once (2005 NIT)
- After getting fired in 2008, Dougherty began working outside of college coaching
- While working in Indianapolis, Dougherty went for a jog from which he never returned; his body was identified several days later
- Died at just 50 years of age; survived by his wife, Patti, and their three children, Megan, Neil and Ryan
