- Hometown: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Alma Mater: Saint Joseph’s University (BA, 2003)
- The son of long-time basketball coach Phil Martelli, Phil Jr. grew up in Philadelphia where his dad coached high school ball and later led the Saint Joseph’s Hawks for 24 years (1995-2019)
- Phil played for his father at St. Joe’s from 1999-2003, playing in two NCAA Tournaments and serving as co-captain as a senior
- Started his coaching career as an assistant under Howie Dickenman at Central Connecticut, then spent one year under Bobby Gonzalez at Manhattan
- Spent five years each on the staffs of Joe Mihalich at Niagara and Monté Ross at Delaware; went to the NCAA Tournament once at each
- Moved to the pro game briefly, spending the 2016-17 season working for Eugene Burroughs and the Delaware 87ers in the NBA G League
- Returned to the college game and Saint Joe’s in 2016, serving as director of basketball operations on his dad’s coaching staff for one year
- Hired in 2018 to be an assistant under Jared Grasso at Bryant and in 2020 was elevated to associate head coach
- Part of the 2021-22 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after winning the NEC
- Named acting head coach in 2023 when Grasso was placed on leave; Grasso later resigned three games into the season and not long after, Martelli was officially hired as the Bulldogs’ head coach
