- Started his coaching career at the high school level, working as an assistant at DeMatha Catholic HS in Hyattsville, MD
- Then served as the head coach at DeLand HS (FL) and Longwood Lyman HS (FL)
- Moved into the college ranks in 1969, serving as a grad assistant at Florida State under Hugh Durham for one season before becoming the head coach at NAIA Birmingham-Southern (AL)
- Spent one season as an assistant on Jim Hatfield’s staff at Mississippi State before getting his first Division I head coaching job in 1979 at Chattanooga
- Coached the Mocs for six seasons, winning 135 games and four SoCon regular season titles
- Worked as an NBA assistant coach for one season, working under Stan Albeck with the Chicago Bulls
- Next jobs were as the head coach at Western Kentucky, the Perth Wildcats of Australia’s NBL and at Okaloosa-Walton CC (now Northwest Florida State) in Niceland, FL
- At WKU, Arnold won the 1987 Sun Belt regular season title
- Won the NBL Championship in 1992, his lone season at Perth
- Led Okaloosa-Walton to the junior college national championship in 1995
- Finished his coaching career at Stetson, coaching the Hatters for three seasons from 1997-2000
