- Born August 7, 1977
- Hometown: Frederick, Maryland
- Alma Mater: Duke University (BA, 2001)
- The son of a US Marine, James grew up all across the country and eventually settled in Maryland, where he starred at Saint John’s Prep
- Played for Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke from 1996-2001, during which the team won five-straight ACC titles
- Was a reserve on the 1999 team that reached the Final Four and a co-captain in 2001 when the Blue Devils were NCAA Champions
- Spent five years playing professionally overseas, including stints in Poland, Japan, Bosnia, the Netherlands and the Philippines
- When his playing career ended in 2008, James returned to Duke to be an assistant strength and conditioning coach
- A year later, Krzyzewski moved James up to be a full-time assistant and he spent the next twelve years on the Duke sideline
- Elevated to associate head coach in 2013, serving in that role through his departure in 2021
- Was part of eleven NCAA Tournaments, including eight Sweet Sixteens and two National Championships (2010 & 2015) as a coach
- In April 2021, James was announced as the new head coach of the Austin Peay Governors in the ASUN
- Went 21-39 over two seasons at the helm and was fired in March 2023 following a 9-22 finish
