  • Alma Mater: Western Kentucky University (BA, 1935) / University of Kentucky (MA, 1944)
  • After graduating from Central City HS (KY), Hickman played for head coach E.A. Diddle at Western Kentucky
  • Started his coaching career at the high school level, coaching at Hodgenville HS (KY) and Valley HS (KY)
  • Hired in 1944 to be the head coach at Louisville, then a member of the KIAC in what is now the NAIA
    • Coached the Cardinals for 23 seasons, finishing above .500 each year
    • Won the 1948 NAIB (now NAIA) title before becoming an NCAA Independent program the following year
    • Went to five NCAA Tournaments (including a trip to the 1959 Final Four) and six NITs (won it in 1956)
    • Also served as the athletic director at Louisville from 1944-1973 (six years after he stopped coaching)
  • Inducted into the Helms Foundation HOF in 1967 and the Louisville Athletics HOF in 1978
  • Survived by two daughters (with late wife, Alene), four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren
