~ ORIGINALLY POSTED MON 4/11, UPDATED WITH QUOTES ON TUE 4/12 ~

Andrew Wilson, who has spent the last nine seasons working under Mark Byington at Georgia Southern and James Madison, has been hired as the new head coach at VMI, the school announced.

“I am excited about the energy and winning mindset that Coach Wilson will bring to our basketball program,” Superintendent Maj. General Cedric T. Wins said. “His strong record of growth and improvement is important for our program to continue to build on its recent successes. Andrew’s leadership and commitment to talent development will serve our cadet-athletes well both on and off the court.”

This is the first head coaching opportunity for Wilson, who also worked as an assistant under Bobby Cremins for six years at College of Charleston. He was a three-time Academic All-ACC honoree at Florida State playing for head coaches Steve Robinson and Leonard Hamilton.

“It’s an honor and privilege to lead the Keydet Basketball program and build off the current team’s success,” Wilson said. “I am very excited to serve our current cadet-athletes and hit the ground running on the recruiting trail. VMI is a special place and I look forward to embracing the many traditions of the Institute. My family and I are very excited to make the VMI post our home for many years to come.”

The Keydets are coming off a 2022 CBI appearance, the program’s first postseason bid in eight years. Former head coach Dan Earl left to take over at SoCon rival Chattanooga last month.
