  • Born in New Castle, PA, Davies attended Duquesne and played basketball for the Dukes and head coach Rev. E.N. McGuigan
    • Served in the United State Navy during World War I
  • Also coached at Homestead HS in Pittsburgh, leading the team two PA State Championships
    • Davies had dropped out of Homestead HS as a freshman to get a job and support his family
  • Played semi-professional basketball during his coaching career, spending time with the Pittsburgh Morrys and Butler Bruin Oils
  • Davies spent 24 years as the head coach at his alma mater, going 314-106 overall in a tenure that took place mostly before the start of the current NCAA Tournament and NIT events
    • The Dukes actually played in both tournaments in 1940, reaching the NCAA Final Four and finishing as NIT Runner-up
    • Appeared in the NIT again in both 1941 and 1947; finished with a 3-4 postseason record (1-1 NCAA, 2-3 NIT)
    • Only had one sub-.500 season throughout his tenure, during which Duquesne was not a member of a formal conference
    • Inducted into the Duquesne Athletic Hall of Fame in 1963, and again in 1968 along with the full 1940-41 “Iron Dukes” team
  • Passed away after a long illness in 1985 at the age of 85
