- The Illinois-native played three seasons at Southern Illinois for Hall of Fame coach Jack Hartman
- Scored over 1,000 points at SIU; later inducted into the Saluki Hall of Fame (class of 1984)
- Started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at SIU; was part of the Saluki team that won the 1967 NIT
- Spent two seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma, going 31-21 overall
- After OU, Ramsey was the head coach at D-III Millikin University in Decatur, IL for 21 seasons
- Was 293-249 during his tenure, winning two CCIW regular season titles and three NCAA D-III Tournaments
- Resigned in 1996 and turned the program over to assistant Tim Littrell
