Cal Poly parting ways with head coach John Smith after five seasons

Cal Poly AD Don Oberhelman announced Friday that the program is parting ways with head coach John Smith at the conclusion of the season. Smith has been at the helm since 2019 but has not won more than 7 games in any single season.

“Thanks to John for his leadership and commitment to our university,” Oberhelman said. “We wish him the very best with what is next for him and his family.”

Smith is currently 30-114 overall and 4-25 on the year and will coach in the Mustangs’ remaining three games. At 0-14, the team has failed to qualify for the Big West Tournament.

Cal Poly has been to the NCAA Tournament just once, courtesy of a surprise Big West Tournament crown in 2014 as the 7-seed. The season prior (2012-13) was the last time they finished above .500 in league play.
