- Alma Mater: Virginia Polytechnic Institute (BA, 1960)
- Was first-team all-state and won a state championship at Jefferson HS (VA) before going on to play for Chuck Noe at Virginia Tech
- Inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame (class of 1991)
- Hired in 1963 to be the head coach at Richmond; at just 26 years old, he was the youngest head coach in Division I
- Went 110-170 in eleven seasons at the helm, twice earning SoCon COY honors
- Left coaching in 1974 for a career in administration, spending 12 years (1974-86) as Athletic Director at VCU
- Later spent four years as the Athletic Director at Western Kentucky, retiring in 1999
