  • Took over as the head coach at Navy in 1980, leading the Midshipmen for six seasons
    • Noted for developing and coaching future Hall of Famer David Robinson at Navy, who led the team to the NCAA Tournament three years in a row (two under Evans and one under his successor Pete Herrmann)
    • During his tenure, Evans was 119-60 overall and won back-to-back CAA titles and CAA Tournaments
  • Spent the last eight seasons of his collegiate coaching career at Pittsburgh
