  • Alma Mater: University of California, Irvine (BA, 1972 & M.Ed, 1975)
  • Started out at Riverside CC (CA) before finishing his career playing for Tim Tift at UC Irvine
    • Stuck around for one year as an assistant, then coached JV for one year at Santa Ana Valley HS (CA)
    • Returned to UCI in 1974 and spent four seasons as one of Tift’s assistant coaches
  • Spent three years as the varsity head coach at Santa Ana Valley HS (1978-81), winning two Century League titles
  • Joined George McQuarn’s staff at Cal State Fullerton in 1981, working with the Titans for four seasons
  • Became the head coach at Ventura CC (CA) in 1985, going 298–56 in ten seasons at the helm
    • Won two CCCAA titles (1987 and 1995); also served as athletic director for one year at the school (1994-95)
  • Moved back to the D-I level in 1995, spending nine seasons as the head coach at San Francisco
    • Was 138-124 overall, highlighted by the 1997-98 season when the Dons won the WCC Tournament and went to the NCAA Tournament; that was Mathews’ only postseason appearance at USF
    • Fired in 2004 after a 17-14 (7-7) season; was .500 six times but ultimately had just an average tenure as head coach
  • Spent two seasons as the head coach San Bernardino Valley CC (CA), finishing as CCCAA Runner-up in 2005
  • Hired by Doc Sadler to be an assistant at Nebraska in 2006, working with the Cornhuskers for four seasons
  • Headed back out West in 2010, spending the next three years on Ben Howland‘s staff at UCLA
  • Since 2013, Mathews has been the head coach at Riverside CC (CA)
  • Inducted into the California CC Men’s Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997
