  • Born April 2, 1951
  • Hometown: Curaçao
  • Alma Mater: University of North Carolina (BA, 1979)
  • Originally from the Dutch island of Curaçao, Wiel was a talented swimmer and sprinter
    • Competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics for the Netherlands Antilles, running the 100-yd and 220-yd dashes
  • Moved to the States and played for Hall of Fame coach Dean Smith and the UNC Tar Heels from 1976-1979
    • Won the ACC and reached the NCAA Tournament in all three years he played, including a NCAA Runner-up finish in 1977
    • After college in the early 1980s, Wiel was a key member of the Dutch National Basketball Team
  • Later started his coaching career at his alma mater, spending seven seasons as one of Smith‘s assistants
    • The Heels reached won three ACC titles and reached seven NCAA Tournaments (including two Final Fours) during that time
    • Wiel was part of the coaching staff in 1992-93 when the Tar Hells went 34-4 and won the NCAA National Championship
  • Hired in 1993 to be the head coach at UNC Asheville, going 32-50 over three seasons at the helm
    • After going just 3-24 in his first year, his team won 18 games in his third; Wiel was awarded Big South COY honors
  • Left UNCA for the Middle Tennessee State job in 1996 and coached the Blue Raiders for the next six years
    • Won 19 games in each of his first two seasons, but failed to continue the success and finished 84-90 overall
  • Wiel and his family continue to live in Murfreesboro, TN; son Zander played baseball at Vanderbilt and was drafted by MIN in 2015
    • In the years since leaving MTSU, Wiel has spent time coaching professional teams in both the Netherlands and China
