  • The New York-native starred at Christ The King HS (NY) before playing for four years at Hofstra under head coach Jay Wright
    • A standout for the Pride, Claxton became the third player to win multiple America East POY honors (1998 and 2000)
    • Won the Haggerty Award in 2000 as the best player in the New York metro area; his jersey number #10 was retired by the school
  • Drafted 20th overall in 2000 by the Philadelphia 76ers and spent the next nine years playing in the NBA for five different franchises
    • Head coaches he played for include Larry Brown (PHI), Gregg Popovich (SAS), Eric Musselman (GSW), Mike Montgomery (GSW), Byron Scott (NOLA) and Mike Woodson (ATL)
    • Was a rotation player for the Spurs in 2002-03 when they won the NBA Championship; he played in 24 playoff games that year
  • After his playing career ended in 2009, he worked for a time as a college scout with the Golden State Warriors
  • Hired in 2013 by new head coach Joe Mihalich to be a special assistant coach at his alma mater, Hofstra
    • Elevated to assistant coach in 2014, serving in that capacity for seven seasons (including one under interim HC Mike Farrelly)
    • During which time, the Pride won three CAA titles and went two NITs
  • In April 2021, the school announced that it hired Claxton to be the head coach, replacing the retired Mihalich
