- Born October 9, 1961
- Hometown: Spokane, Washington
- Alma Mater: University of Idaho (BS, 1985) / University of Alabama at Birmingham (M.Ed., 1988)
- Father, Don Monson, was head coach at both Idaho and Oregon
- Started coaching with two seasons as a graduate assistant at UAB under head coach Gene Bartow
- Spent nine seasons at Gonzaga as an assistant under Dan Fitzgerald before taking over as Zags head coach in 1997
- Won the WCC regular season in each of his two seasons as Gonzaga head coach and went to the 1999 NCAA Elite Eight
- Was head coach at Minnesota for eight seasons, going to one NCAA Tournament and four NITs during his tenure
- Accepted an offer to be the head coach at Washington in 2002 before being convinced to stay at Minnesota
- Resigned from UM after a 2-5 start to the 2006-07; following that season, was hired at Long Beach State
- Has won four Big West titles and made six postseason appearances (2 NCAA, 4 NIT) with the Beach
- Monson was let go in March 2024, but elected to finish out the season and ended up leading The Beach to Big West Tournament crown (his second) and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament
- The following month, Monson was hired as the new head coach at Eastern Washington in the Big Sky
