- Played under head coach John Reid at North Texas in Denton, TX
- Started as a teacher and coach at Pilot Point HS (TX)
- Spent 17 seasons leading the boys’ basketball team at Crozier Technical HS in Dallas
- Won a state title there in 1946 and reached the state playoffs seven times in total
- Arrived at SMU in 1947, where he would coach the Mustangs for the next 20 years
- Claimed eight Southwest Conference titles during his tenure and went to the NCAA Tournament six times
- His 1955-56 squad reached the NCAA Final Four, the first (and still only) trip for the program
- Retired from coaching in 1967, spending two more years at SMU as a special associate
- Claimed eight Southwest Conference titles during his tenure and went to the NCAA Tournament six times
- Spent two years as director of player personnel with the Dallas Chaparrals of the ADA
- Along with his wife, Kathleen, was killed in a one-car accident in Terrell, TX; he was 67 years old
- Hayes and his wife were survived by their two sons, Richard and John
- Inducted into the SMU Athletics HOF (2012), North Texas Athletics HOF (1986) and Texas Sports HOF (1972)
