  • Played for legendary head coach Morgan Woottten at prep powerhouse DeMatha Catholic HS in Hyattsville, MD
    • Simpkins was a highly-recruited prospect and played in the 1992 McDonald’s All-American game
  • Was a three-year starter and captain at Maryland for head coach Gary Williams (1992-96)
    • Helped lead the Terps to three-straight NCAA Tournaments; reached the Sweet Sixteen in 1994 and 1995
    • Played professionally overseas in China, Italy, the Dominican Republic, France and Belgium
    • Also played in the United States in the USBL and the ABA from 2000-02
    • Had a stint (1999-2000) as an assistant coach at Bishop O’Connell HS in Arlington, VA
  • Started out his coaching career back at Maryland in 2004, hired by Williams as an assistant compliance administrator
  • He served as the head coach at Sidwell Friends School (2005-07) and St. Albans School (2007-11), both in DC
  • Moved back to the college ranks in 2011 as coordinator of basketball operations for Pat Skerry at Towson
  • Spent three seasons working as an assistant at UNC Greensboro under head coach Wes Miller
  • Returned to the DMV in 2015 to be an assistant under Dave Paulsen at George Mason and worked there for eight seasons (one as associate HC)
    • Simpkins’ last two seasons at George Mason were as an assistant coach under Kim English
  • Hired in April 2023 to be the new head coach at American University in DC
