- Along with his twin brother, Jarvis Hayes, graduated from Douglass HS (GA) and played their freshman year for head coach Phil Hopkins at Western Carolina; Jarvis led the SoCon in scoring as a freshman
- The twins both transferred to Georgia in 2000 to play for the Bulldogs and head coach Jim Harrick; Jonas spent one more season at UGA playing for Dennis Felton while his brother went to the NBA in 2003
- Started his coaching career in 2004 at alma mater Douglass HS (GA), spending one year there as an assistant
- Was an assistant for one year each at Morehouse (under Grady Brewer) and South Carolina State (under Jamal Brown)
- Joined Stephen Miss’ staff at D-II Belmont Abbey, working there for five seasons; Miss was an assistant at AGE during Hayes’ playing days
- Returned to his alma mater in 2012 as director of basketball operations under Mark Fox and was elevated to assistant coach the following year, working in that role for five seasons
- Was on staff for one NCAA Tournament (2017) and three NITs (2014, 2016, 2017)
- Hired as an assistant at Xavier in 2018, working under Travis Steele for four seasons (the last as associate head coach)
- Elevated to interim head coach in March 2022 with Steele’s dismissal following the Musketeers’ opening round NIT victory; Hayes went 4-0 as head coach, leading Xavier in the 2022 NIT title
- Hired in April 2022 to be head coach at Georgia State, returning to his hometown Atlanta and reuniting with brother, Jarvis
