- Born in Kentucky and raised in Indiana, Davis graduated from Wapahani HS (IN) and Asbury College (KY)
- Started his career as a graduate assistant at East Tennessee State, then coached by Jim Halihan
- Was the head coach for one year (1982-83) at Cloverport HS (KY) and two years (1983-85) at Oak Hill Academy (VA)
- Spent the next twelve years as an assistant at the Division I level, with stints at Delaware (under Steve Steinwedel), Wake Forest (under Dave Odom), Ball State (under Ray McCallum) and Minnesota (under Clem Haskins)
- Was a part of three NCAA Tournaments at Wake and two (later vacated) at Minnesota
- Hired in 1997 to be the head coach at Furman, leading the Paladins for the next nine seasons
- Went 124-139 overall, finishing above .500 four times but never reaching the postseason
- In 2006, he resigned to become the associate head coach at Cincinnati under new head coach Mick Cronin
- Worked with the Bearcats for the next twelve seasons, where he was part of eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances (including one Sweet Sixteen) and two conference titles
- Served as interim head coach for much of the 2014-15 season while Cronin was on medical leave, going 16-9 at the helm and leading the Bearcats to a first-round NCAA Tournament victory over Purdue
- Resigned in October 2018 as a result of an incident that occurred in September 2017 in which Davis was accused of assault on an airplane; he was later sentenced to two years of probation in North Carolina
- Was briefly the head basketball coach at Lincoln Academy in Winston-Salem, NC but the school closed in 2019
