• Norman Lesley Sloan, Jr.
• Born June 25, 1926
• Died December 9, 2003
• Hometown: Anderson, Indiana
• Alma Mater: North Carolina State University (BS, 1951)
• After graduating from Lawrence Central HS in Indianapolis, played for head coach Everett Case at NC State from 1947-49
• First coaching job was at Presbyterian College in 1951, then in the NAIA, where he was 69-36 over four seasons as head coach
• After one year as an assistant to Eugene Lambert at Memphis State, Sloan was hired as head coach at Division I The Citadel
  • Went 57-38 overall in four seasons with the Bulldogs
• Hired for his first stint at Florida in 1960, coaching the Gators until 1966 when he left to become the head coach at his alma mater, NC State
• Took the Wolfpack to the NCAA Tournament three times and the NIT twice during his 14-year tenure as head coach
  • The 1972-73 team finished the season a perfect 27-0 (12-0 ACC), winning the conference title and tournament but were ineligible for the NCAA Tournament due to rules violations involving the recruitment of star player David Thompson
  • The following season, NC State went 30-1 en route to a victory over Marquette in the 1974 NCAA National Championship
• Sloan returned to Florida for a second stint as head coach in 1980, coaching the Gators for an additional nine seasons
  • Two NCAA Tournaments (1987 & 1988) were later vacated due to NCAA rules violations regarding star player Vernon Maxwell
  • Sloan was forced to retire from coaching in October 1989 as a result of the scandal
• Inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984 and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1994
• Along with his wife, Joan, had one son and one daughter
