Philip Lane Johnson
Born June 4, 1958
Hometown: Warr Acres, Oklahoma
Alma Mater: East Central Oklahoma State University (BA, 1981) / Henderson State University (MA, 1982)
Played at East Central Oklahoma from 1977-81, then became an assistant coach at the school
Spent five years as a junior college head coach before joining J. D. Barnett‘s staff at Tulsa in 1990
Worked as an assistant for two seasons at New Orleans under Tim Floyd, then five at Arizona under Lute Olson before getting the head coaching gig at San José State in 1998
Left SJSU after just one year to become one of Floyd‘s assistants with the Chicago Bulls
- Stayed with the team for two years, including time under Bill Cartwright after Floyd‘s resignation
Returned to San José State as head coach in 2002, coaching the Spartans for 3 more seasons (4 total) and going 31-83 overall
Rejoined Floyd in 2005 as an assistant at USC, staying with the Trojans for five years – the final under Kevin O’Neill after Floyd resigned
Became an assistant at UTEP in 2010, his fourth stint working under Tim Floyd
- Named interim head coach at UTEP in November 2017 following Floyd’s retirement, going 10-15 overall
