  • Alma Mater: St. Ambrose University (BA, 1949)
  • Graduated from St. Ambrose Academy and St. Ambrose University, both in Davenport, Iowa
  • Started his career at his alma mater, spending eight years as head coach at the Academy (now known as Assumption HS)
  • First collegiate job was a one-year stint assisting Sharm Scheuerman for the Iowa Hawkeyes
  • Hired in 1959 to be the head coach at Creighton, located in his hometown of Omaha, NE
    • Led the Bluejays for ten seasons, compiling an overall record of 138-118
    • Won 21+ games in 1962 and 1964, reaching the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in both seasons
    • From 1961 to 1969, McManus also served as Creighton’s athletic director
    • Inducted into the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame (class of 1979)
  • Remained close to the program after his coaching stint ended in 1969, helping to mentor future generations of Creighton players and coaches (including head coaches Dana Altman and Greg McDermott)
  • Passed away in 2013 at the age of 88; survived by his wife, Mary Jean, and their three children
