- Hometown: Platteville, Wisconsin
- Alma Mater: University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (BA, 2002)
- Ryan is the son of long-time Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan and grew up in Platteville where his father was coaching
- Played for his dad for two years at D-III UW-Platteville, winning back-to-back NCAA titles (1998 & 1999)
- Transferred to Milwaukee, where he finished his career and degree while continuing to play for his dad
- Joined his dad‘s staff at Wisconsin in 2002 as a video assistant and later DBO; worked with the Badgers through the 2006-07 season
- Became a full-time assistant at North Dakota State in 2007, working under Saul Phillips for seven seasons
- Hired to be the head coach at D-II Wheeling University (WV) in 2019; went 14-13 in his lone season at the school
- In June 2020, Ryan became the head coach of the D-I Green Bay Phoenix of the Horizon League
- In January 2023, Green Bay parted ways with Ryan; the Phoenix were 2-19 on the year and 15-61 overall in 2+ seasons
