- Hometown: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
- Alma Mater: Catawba College (BA, 1975) / Howard University (MA)
- NC-native played at Catawba College (NC) before starting his coaching career in 1976
- Spent 11 seasons as an assistant to A. B. Williamson at Howard
- Was part of three MEAC titles and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 1981
- Became the head coach at South Carolina State, also in the MEAC, in 1987
- Went 276-200 over sixteen seasons with the Bulldogs, winning the MEAC six times
- Claimed five MEAC Tournament titles for five automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament
- Left for Tennessee State in 2003, coaching the Tigers for six seasons
- Was 67-106 overall at TSU, finishing below .500 each year before getting fired in 2009
- Alexander returned to the MEAC in 2012 as head coach at North Carolina A&T
- Won the MEAC Tournament and returned to the Big Dance in his first season
- Resigned in 2016 after a 5-17 start; the Aggies went 9-23 in each of the previous two seasons
- Returned to the college game in August 2022 when he joined Landon Bussie‘s staff as an assistant at Alcorn State (SWAC)
