Sacramento State hires David Patrick as head coach
Sacramento State has announced the hiring of David Patrick as the Hornets’ new head men’s basketball coach. Patrick is the former head coach at UC Riverside and spent the past season as an assistant at Oklahoma.
“We are thrilled to welcome David to Sacramento State to lead our men’s basketball program,” said AD Mark Orr. “David’s vision for our program and his values as a leader of student-athletes align perfectly with our University. He has a wide range of experience, and a proven track record of recruiting and developing student-athletes to meet their goals. I look forward building a championship basketball program under his leadership. The future is very bright for Hornet basketball.”
Patrick went 27-38 in two seasons as the head coach at UCR, resigning in 2020 to join Eric Musselman‘s staff at Arkansas. After helping the Razorbacks get to the Elite Eight, Patrick joined Porter Moser‘s staff at OU. Earlier in his career, Patrick had stints at TCU, LSU, Saint Mary’s and Nicholls. A well-regarded recruiter with international connections, Patrick was instrumental in getting Australian star Ben Simmons to LSU.
“I’m ecstatic to be named the new head men’s basketball coach at Sacramento State,” said Patrick. “After my first conversation with Mark Orr, I could feel his passion and energy for the potential he envisions for Sacramento State basketball, and his love for the city. This program has all the characteristics to compete for Big Sky Conference championships. I’ve been around winning at every stop of my coaching journey, and that is the DNA I will instill in this program. My number one goal will be to ensure our young men leave Sacramento State with a degree in hand, and they learn to be leaders in their homes and in the community.”
Sacramento State has never participated in the NCAA Tournament, having moved up to Division I level in 1991. Former head coach Brian Katz retired prior to the 2021-22 season after 13 years at the helm, turning the team over in the interim to Brandon Laird.
