- Hometown: Rantoul, Illinois
- Alma Mater: University of Evansville (BA, 1997) / University of Indianapolis (MBA, 1999)
- After graduating from Rantoul Township HS (IL), Richardson started out at East Carolina, playing one year for head coach Eddie Payne
- Transferred to Evansville in 1995, where he finished his degree and his playing career under head coach Jim Crews
- Started his coaching career in 1997, serving as an assistant under Todd Sturgeon at D-II Indianapolis for two seasons while getting his MBA
- Spent fourteen years working as an assistant at the Division I level under a number of head coaches:
- Royce Waltman (Indiana State), Ed Schilling (Wright State), Steve Merfeld (Evansville), Matt Brown (UMKC), Mark Phelps (Drake), Chris Mack (Xavier) and Rick Pitino (Louisville)
- Only worked at Louisville for one season but was on the staff for the Cardinals (now vacated) 2013 NCAA title
- Royce Waltman (Indiana State), Ed Schilling (Wright State), Steve Merfeld (Evansville), Matt Brown (UMKC), Mark Phelps (Drake), Chris Mack (Xavier) and Rick Pitino (Louisville)
- Returned to UMKC in 2013 to become the Kangaroos new head coach
- Led the team to the CBI in 2017, the first ever Division I postseason berth for the program
- Fired in March 2019 after six seasons, going 75-118 during that time
- Worked a second stint at Indiana State, spending two more seasons as an assistant on Greg Lansing‘s staff (2019-21)
- Spent one season as an assistant at Clemson under Brad Brownell, then in 2022 joined Kevin Keatts‘ staff at NC State
- Along with his wife, Greta, has three children
