Old Dominion coach Jeff Jones will take a leave for remainder of the season
Old Dominion announced on Sunday that head men’s basketball coach Jeff Jones would be taking a leave for the rest of the 2023-24 season due to health issues. Jones suffered a heart attack in December before the Monarchs’ first game in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu and assistant coach Kieran Donohue has been serving in the interim since then.
After returning to Virginia, Jones, 63, learned that he would need to start prostate cancer treatment for the fourth time since an initial surgery in June 2015. He has been the head coach at Old Dominion since 2013 and before that served in the same capacity at both American (2000-2013) and Virginia (1990-1998).
Donohue will continue to serve as interim head coach, as the Monarchs (4-13, 0-5) are due to host Marshall at Chartway Arena on 1/18.
