- Hometown: Hickory, North Carolina
- Alma Mater: Lenoir-Rhyne University (BA, 1977)
- First coaching jobs were as an assistant at North State Academy, then for two seasons at Davidson under Eddie Biedenbach
- Worked as an assistant at George Mason for five seasons under head coach Joe Harrington
- Spent one season each as an assistant at Alabama under Wimp Sanderson and at Ohio State under Hall of Famer Gary Williams
- First head coaching job came in 1987 at George Mason; Barnes would take the same job at Providence a year later and make his first three NCAA Tournament trips with the Friars during his six-year tenure
- Spent four seasons as the head coach at Clemson, going to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT
- Barnes was hired in 1998 to be head coach at Texas, leading the program for 17 years
- Successful tenure with the Longhorns included 16 trips to the NCAA Tournament, going to the Final Four in 2003, the Elite Eight twice (2006 & 2008) and Sweet Sixteen twice (2002 & 2004)
- Won 20+ games in all but two seasons and twice won 30+ games with the Longhorns
- Notable players recruited and coached include Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin, T.J. Ford, Myles Turner, P.J. Tucker, Tristan Thompson and Jordan Hamilton, among others
- Fired as the Texas head coach in March 2015 after the Longhorns were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament
- Hired less than a week later to be the new head coach at Tennessee
- Won a share of the 2018 SEC regular season title in his second season, earning the Vols an at-large NCAA bid
- Won the SEC Tournament in 2022, the first for the program since 1979, and earned a NCAA 3-seed
