- Started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at D-II Lake Erie (OH)
- Spent one season each as an assistant at Garden City CC (KS) and Western Texas College
- Moved up to D-I in 2007, working as DBO under Kermit Davis for two seasons at Middle Tennessee
- Next stops were a four-year stint with Robbie Laing at Campbell and two years with LeVelle Moton at NC Central
- Joined Chris Beard‘s staff at Little Rock in 2015 and followed him to Texas Tech in 2016
- Was Chief of Staff (DBO) at Tech for two seasons and then an assistant coach for two more
- Part of three NCAA Tournaments under Beard, including the Red Raiders NCAA Runner-up finish in 2019
- Hired in March 2020 to become the head coach at Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt
- In three seasons at the helm, Burg went 43-45 overall; in March 2023, the school declined to renew his contract
- Reunited with Beard in July 2023, becoming an analyst on his staff at Ole Miss
