Ball State fires head men’s basketball coach James Whitford after nine years
James Whitford was fired on Monday after nine seasons as the head coach at Ball State. Whitford went 131-148 overall, reaching the CIT twice but never the NCAA Tournament or NIT.
“James restored respect into the program, made the state of Indiana a recruiting priority and represented the Cardinals with integrity,” AD Beth Goetz said in a release. “I am grateful to James for his contributions to our athletes, department and University, and wish him the best moving forward.”
The Cardinals shared three MAC West divisional titles under Whitford, most recently in 2020. Whitford was hired in 2013 after four seasons on staff at Arizona under Sean Miller.
