John Aiken fired after two seasons as McNeese head coach

John Aiken has been fired as the head coach at McNeese, the school announced on Wednesday. Aiken went 22-45 overall after getting promoted in March 2021 following three years as associate head coach under former head coach, and current athletic director, Heath Schroyer.

“This is a really hard day for me personally,” said Schroyer. “John is a dear friend and a damn good basketball coach. I know John extremely well and I have no doubt he will bounce back, get another opportunity and be successful as a head coach in the future.”

Aiken had signed a three-year contract and will be paid out the remainder of his contract, per the release.

The Cowboys have not played in the NCAA Tournament since 2002, and their last postseason appearance of any kind was a trip to the CIT in 2012.

The coaching rumor mill indicates that Schroyer is targeting former LSU head coach Will Wade. More on this as we hear it…
