- Played at UMass under head coach Jack Leaman; had his jersey number #30 retired in 2004
- Played alongside Rick Pitino, future NBA star Julius Erving and future AL Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan
- Spent six seasons playing professionally in the NBA/ABA with three different teams
- First coaching job was as an assistant for Ron Petro at Marist
- Was an assistant for two seasons at Rhode Island under Tom Penders before taking over as head coach in 1988
- Went to two NCAA Tournaments and two NITs during his nine-year tenure at URI
- Hired as the head coach at Boston College in 1997, where he would stay for 13 seasons
- Won 247 games, went to seven NCAA Tournaments and won two Big East titles while at BC
- Coached several future NBA players throughout his career, including Lamar Odom, Cuttino Mobley and Jared Dudley
- Spent two years as a Bryant assistant to Tim O’Shea, one of his own former assistants, before being hired as head coach at Kennesaw State in 2015
- Skinner resigned from Kennesaw State after four seasons with the Owls, going 41-84 during that tenure
