  • Norman Eugene Stewart
  • Born January 20, 1935
  • Hometown: Shelbyville, Missouri
  • Alma Mater: University of Missouri (BA, 1956 & MA, 1960)
  • Played four seasons for the Missouri Tigers basketball team under head coach Wilbur “Sparky” Stalcup
    • Selected by the St. Louis Hawks in the 1956 NBA Draft, playing one season for the franchise
    • Played minor league baseball for the Aberdeen Pheasants (part of the Orioles’ organization) in 1957
  • Started his coaching career as an assistant at Missouri under Stalcup for four seasons
  • Was head coach at Northern Iowa (then College Division and known as State College of Iowa) for six seasons
    • Compiled a 97-42 record, made two NCAA College Division (now D-II) Tournaments and reached the 1964 Final Four
  • Returned to alma mater Mizzou in 1967, spending the next 32 seasons as the Tigers’ head coach
    • Went 631-332 during his tenure, reaching 15 NCAA Tournaments (4 Sweet Sixteens) and 5 NITs
      • Irregularities in recruiting, benefits and academics at Missouri between 1985 and 1989 led to the NCAA placing the school on probation and limiting recruiting time and scholarship numbers for the 1991-93 seasons
      • Additionally, the Tigers’ 1994 Elite Eight appearance was vacated after a player was found to have received improper benefits from an agent
    • Retired from coaching in 1999 at age 64, ten years removed from being diagnosed with (and beating) colon cancer
    • Missouri’s home basketball court at Mizzou Arena is named Norm Stewart Court in his honor
  • Later inducted into the National College Basketball Hall of Fame (c/o 2007)
    • Was a part of the inaugural class of the Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990
  • Remains involved with basketball and the Missouri program, providing color commentary on television broadcasts
  • Along with his wife, Virginia, has one daughter and one son
