Marty Richter hired as head coach at USC Upstate

Drake assistant Marty Richter has been announced as the new head coach at USC Upstate. The Iowa-native spent the last six seasons working under Darian DeVries and before that was the head coach at Florida Southwestern College for two years.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Marty Richter as our new men’s basketball coach. Marty has a proven track record as a winner and a program builder,” said AD Matthew Martin. “His enthusiasm is infectious, and his passion for developing strong relationships with our student-athletes, campus, and community make him a great fit here at USC Upstate. We’re ecstatic to welcome Marty, his wife Brynn, and their children to the Upstate family.”

Richter has held a variety of jobs during his career, including a four-year run at Florida Gulf Coast that included the famous “Dunk City” NCAA Sweet Sixteen run in 2013. He has also worked at South Dakota, Bowling Green and briefly at Indiana, and spent some time working for ESPN as a college evaluator and scout.

“I’d like to thank Matt Martin and Dr. Bennie Harris for selecting me to lead the next chapter of Spartan Men’s Basketball. I’m honored to join the USC Upstate and Spartanburg community,” said Richter. “My family and I are eager to become an integral part of our men’s basketball program’s transformative future and contribute to the success of the overall athletic department and institution. We are gonna have fun.”

USC Upstate has never been to the NCAA Tournament and is currently on a run of seven-straight seasons without a winning record. The Spartans did, however, appear in the CBI in 2023 and CIT in 2022. Former head coach Dave Dickerson resigned last month to take a staff position at Ohio State.
