Mike Davis accepts head coach position at Detroit Mercy

Texas Southern head coach Mike Davis will become the new head coach at Detroit Mercy, ending a months-long search by the Horizon League program. Davis has had tremendous success at the helm of the Tigers, winning four SWAC titles in six years (finishing 2nd in the other two seasons) and going to the NCAA Tournament four times.

Detroit Mercy has made just one NCAA Tournament appearance since since 2000. The school cut ties with former head coach Bacari Alexander in March after just two seasons, both 8-win campaigns. The search stretched on for over two months before Davis was hired. The 57-year old coach will have his work cut out for him as he tries to lead a fourth program to the Big Dance. Seven players have left the program via graduation, transfer or professional opportunities, including three of the top four scorers. One of the first decisions for Davis will be whether or not to retain assistant coach Jermaine Jackson, a UDM alum who’s son – Jermaine, Jr. – starred on the team last year as a freshman.

Prior to Texas Southern, Davis was the head coach at both Indiana and UAB. He is perhaps best known for taking over the Hoosiers’ program after the firing of legendary head coach Bob Knight and leading the team to an NCAA Runner-Up finish in 2002.
