  • Played for head coach Bob Johnson at Division III Emory and Henry in Emory, VA; served as team captain as a junior and senior
  • Started his coaching career right away, working as an assistant to Johnson at his alma mater for two seasons
  • Spent one season assisting Oliver Purnell at Radford before becoming an assistant at Wofford in 1989 under Richard Johnson
    • Was one of Johnson’s assistants for thirteen seasons before taking over as head coach in 2002 when Johnson became AD
    • Helped navigate the program’s transition to Division I and has led the Terriers to five NCAA Tournaments and has captured the SoCon regular season title four times
      • Won in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the first ever Division I postseason win for the program
  • Left Wofford in April 2019 when he was hired as the head coach at Virginia Tech
    • Went 15-7 (9-4 ACC) in 2020-21 and got the Hokies back into the NCAA Tournament as an at-large
    • In 2022, Young and the Hokies won the ACC Tournament for the first time in program history
  • Along with his wife, Margaret, has one daughter and one son
